Exploring the Film, The Outsiders Essay - 630 Words

In films, film-makers make deliberate use of certain techniques to influence views to make a certain viewpoint. In the film ‘The Outsiders’, the director Francis Ford Coppola believes nothing gold can stay when it comes to teenagers. He believes that the strength and beauty in teenagers can never stay concrete because it is ruined by adulthood. In the film Coppola shows and represents two groups, the socs and the greasers. Soc is pronounced like society, and means just that: money, nice cars, nice homes and a bright future. Greasers are the poor kids from the bad side of town with no future and no real hope. Coppola explores how cultural assumptions underpin the ways in which teenagers are represented in films. There are three key†¦show more content†¦Ponyboy makes Johnny aware of the poem the movie is based on which states that nothing gold can stay, just like their valued teenage years. In the town which has a rich and a poor side, the whistle of the local tra in that passes though it is only heard from the where the greasers’ live. The recurrence of the train whistle allows the views to know when the greasers are in town. Coppola uses motifs and repetition in the plot to enforce his interpretation of teenagers. At various stages in the film, Coppola explores common assumptions about the Greasers then challengers them using the plot. Ponyboy Curtis is a reader (‘Gone with the Wind’) which goes against all common assumptions made about him. In the scene when PonyBoy Curtis and Johnny Cade go looking for Dallas Winston at a party, they come to find him sleeping and that is not how Greasers are meant to be represented. Dallas also cares and helps his fellow Greasers Johnny and Ponyboy escape from the town after violence broke out between the two groups. As the older one, he gave then money and advice on how to stay safe. In addition Coppola makes this clear using vocabulary. Vocabulary is just one of the aspects Coppola uses to make his representations clear. The first half of the film shows the Greasers at their worst and the vocabulary just adds to this characteristic.
